What aspects of Corfu do you find most captivating, and how would you recommend visitors fully experience the island’s unique charm?

I first fell in love with Corfu a few years back during a spontaneous holiday, and I found it to be incredibly different from other Greek islands I’ve visited. There’s a unique Italian charm to Corfu that makes it stand out. The architecture and the narrow streets give you the feeling of being in Calabria rather than Greece. Corfu is anything but small; it offers many hidden gems that require a generous amount of time to explore.

My top tip for anyone visiting is to stroll through Corfu Town without a map. Embrace getting lost in the narrow streets filled with beautiful buildings, treat yourself to a glass of wine or a cup of coffee, and simply enjoy the moment without any specific destination in mind. Corfu Old Town has so many iconic places and historical spots that you can easily walk to, especially with an ice cream in hand (I recommend stopping by at Loretto, it’s my favorite place for artisan ice cream). When you’re in the town centre, you’ll really get a sense of the island’s charm.

What is your favourite hidden beach or secret spot on the island, and what makes it special?

One of my favourite hidden gems in Corfu is found along the northeastern coast: Psathopoulou Beach. This place requires a short hike, but trust me, every step is worth it. When you finally reach the beach, you will find natural beauty and sparkling, crystal-clear waters. It’s the perfect spot for a refreshing swim, and since it’s not usually crowded, it is a very peaceful experience.

If you find yourself in the southern part of the island, be sure to check out Notos village. Here, a small bay and beach are surrounded by a botanical garden filled with banana trees and other flora. It offers the perfect shady spot to relax and feel like
you’re in an exotic getaway.

What time of the year do you think is the best for visiting Corfu for a unique experience, and what activities are best during that season?

I think that the best time to visit Corfu for a unique experience is either during the spring (May to June) or in September. During these months, the island is less crowded, allowing for a more intimate exploration of its beauty and culture.

In spring, the island is in full bloom. This is an excellent time for nature lovers. Additionally, local festivities related to Easter, including colourful parades and traditional feasts, offer a good insight into Greek culture. In fall, the weather remains warm, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. This season also marks the olive harvest, offering an opportunity to visit olive farms and olive oil tastings.

What are some traditional Corfiot dishes that travelers must try, and can you share any insider tips on where to find the best versions of these dishes?

One of the must-try dishes is Pastitsada. This delightful dish consists of meat, traditionally rooster, simmered in a spicy tomato sauce and served over pasta. The tender meat absorbs the rich flavors of the sauce, creating a deliciously hearty meal. While the original recipe features rooster, you’ll often find beef as a substitute in many restaurants, and it’s still incredibly tasty.

Another fantastic dish for meat lovers is Sofrito. This traditional Corfiot specialty features veal or beef that’s been braised until fork-tender and cooked in a garlic and white wine sauce, often accompanied by a sprinkle of parsley. The flavors are delicate yet deeply satisfying, making it a beloved dish among locals.

For an authentic dining experience, my personal favorite restaurant is Rouvas Taverna, located in the heart of Corfu Town. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the menu features a range of traditional dishes prepared with care. The taste is simply amazing, and it’s a great place to enjoy the true essence of Corfiot cuisine.

For those looking to savor authentic Greek wine while in Corfu, what are some of the best local wineries or wine bars to visit?

Greek wine truly offers an incredible selection for connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike, whether you prefer white or red varieties. Some notable examples include the crisp and refreshing Assyrtiko for white wine lovers, and the rich and full-bodied Xinomavro for red enthusiasts. Each region boasts its unique flavors, making Greek wine an exciting journey of discovery.

When in Corfu, I highly recommend visiting Ambelonas estate. This large farm not only produces its own wine and olive oil but also provides a stunning and authentic environment. The romantic atmosphere is perfect for enjoying a leisurely dinner, alongside delightful olive oil and wine tastings.

For a memorable wine bar experience, Salto Wine Bar is my top pick. It stands out for its unparalleled quality and service, offering an amazing selection of wines paired with delicious food. The menu includes a wide variety of shareable small dishes, reminiscent of tapas, as well as some hearty main courses—everything complements the wine beautifully.

Additionally, there’s a new wine tasting bar in Corfu Town called Choes, which seems to be a fantastic addition to the local gourmet scene. It’s an exciting place to explore and sample a curated selection of wines that celebrate the richness of Greek viticulture.

What experiences and cultural sites should a traveler explore in Corfu during their week-long vacation?

I highly recommend renting a car as your first step to fully explore Corfu. The island is quite large, and it’s nearly impossible to see all its highlights in just one week.

Start by spending some time in Corfu Town, the island’s capital. The old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is incredibly romantic and filled with fascinating sights, amazing cafés and restaurants.

Then, I recommend a road trip to the northeastern side of Corfu, where you can visit stunning spots like Barbati, Kalami, and Kassiopi. The crystal-clear waters in these areas make for a beautiful experience. Be sure to make a stop at Old Perithia, the oldest village on the island, where you can enjoy a walk beneath Mount Pantokrator and enjoy a meal at a traditional restaurant.

On the western side, I suggest checking out Paleokastritsa. Consider taking a boat tour to discover secluded beaches that can only be reached by water.

Then, make your way south to Halikounas Beach and the nearby Korission Lake, where you’ll find a unique blend of wild nature and sand dunes for a different atmosphere. Lastly, take a cruise to the neighboring islands of Paxos and Antipaxos to enjoy even more of the beautiful Greek landscape during your holiday.

What is your favourite restaurant in Corfu, and what makes it stand out from the other amazing dining options on the island?

It’s truly impossible to pick just one favourite restaurant in Corfu, as the island offers a great gastronomy scene. Corfiot cuisine is deeply influenced by Italian flavours and styles, evident not just in the food, but also in the atmosphere and beautiful architecture that reflect the island’s history.

For authentic Italian food, Pizzeria A Mano in the Old Town and Pizzeria Vesuvio are both excellent choices for delicious pizza and pasta. If you’re looking to indulge in traditional Corfiot cuisine, I already mentioned Rouvas Tavern as a must-visit—it’s essential to try the local dishes while you’re in Corfu! Another fantastic option is Marina’s Taverna, also located in the city centre.

If you’re in the mood for a romantic dinner, the Garitsa area along the seaside is absolutely lovely and just a short walk from the center. There are many wonderful traditional Greek restaurants around, and you’re likely to enjoy any of them.

If you venture North around the area of Old Perithia village, don’t miss The Old Perithia Taverna; it’s a hidden gem known for its delightful homemade food.

For a taste of local favorites, make sure to venture out of the center to Spiro’s Taverna in Tzavros, near Gouvia. I consider their gyros and souvlaki pitas the best on the island.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a stunning seaside experience, Piedra del Mar at Barbati Beach is fantastic. Whether you stop by for lunch, dinner, or even just a cocktail, you’ll be treated to exquisite Mediterranean flavors in an incredible setting.
